…morning light is magic…

In the Skimmer Lane

Calm winds and low tide equaled some good low-level photo op’s at Bolivar Flats yesterday.  Met up with a couple of other photographers, Matt & Susan, and hit the sand bars.  Started out getting some Avocet silhouette shots and then moved west.  Picked a good spot and ended up directly in the flight path of more Black Skimmers than I’ve seen for a long time.  They kept coming flying right towards us in waves.  My camera did a good job of keeping the birds in focus for the head-on shots.

Taken with Canon 1DX and Canon 500mm F4 IS II with 1.4X III teleconverter mounted on Skimmer ground pod with Wimberley II gimbal head

  1. BRAVO! This is the most exquisite bird studies I have seen for a long time. It’s hard to pick a favourite, all three genuine masterpieces, Tim.

    • Thanks Dina. Really appreciate your kind words. It pays to be at the right place at the right time. Luckily for me, I live near that place and go there all of the time.

  2. Awesome shots Tim. Love that 7 wide shot. That glassy foreground and pano crop look great.

    • Thanks Doug. I could see the waves of Skimmers coming from quite a distance away so it was fun tracking them in and getting lots of shots. I’m glad that I have the 1DX, as my old 7D wouldn’t have been able to track them as well coming straight at me.

    • Thanks Lyle. I love it when the birds cooperate and was surprised that there were this many Skimmers flying in my direction. They ended up landing further down the sand bar behind us, which kept the stream of birds coming our way.

  4. Great to see you again yesterday Tim, my 7D only was able to get one group coming through…will email you in a bit. Great shots yesterday, love that last one! Really do appreciate you taking the time out for Susan and I! Think it’s time to invest in some waders for my next trip over.

    • Thanks Matt. It was good to see you again as well. I was happy to hang out with you and Susan. It’s always nice to see other photographers at Bolivar, especially those willing to get down and dirty. Waders do come in handy out there.

    • Thanks Emily. That’s what I was going for 🙂 Near perfect conditions and some good luck resulted in lots of fun that morning. Having so many Skimmers flying towards us was a very cool experience.

    • Thanks Judy. Days like that don’t come around often so I was glad that I was able to take advantage of it. Gotta love living near the Gulf.
